From Discovery to Clinical Trials: How NCRIS Is Accelerating a Breakthrough in Ovarian Cancer Detection

This breakthrough work is bringing lifesaving early‑detection tools closer to reality

 

Professor John Hooper and his team at Mater Research Institute and The University of Queensland are bringing new hope to women with ovarian cancer through the development of innovative imaging agents designed to detect the disease earlier, when treatment is most effective.

The latest NCRIS testimonial video showcases how this promising research has progressed from the laboratory to human clinical trials, highlighting the critical role Australia’s national research infrastructure plays in translating discoveries into real-world health outcomes. By accessing NCRIS-enabled National Imaging Facility and Therapeutic Innovation Australia facilities, the team was able to rigorously evaluate their imaging agents using advanced PET imaging technologies, an essential step on the path to the clinic. 

Supported by the National Biologics Facility, the project is now being tested in cancer patients, marking a major milestone in the development of new tools for the early detection and treatment of ovarian cancer. Read more about TIA’s role in supporting translational research in our case study.

Professor Hooper recently reflected on the importance of national research infrastructure as part of the health panel at the NCRIS 20th Anniversary Symposium, where he joined researchers from across Australia to discuss the role of shared infrastructure in driving scientific breakthroughs.

His message reinforces the impact of the Australian Government’s $4 billion investment in the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS), which provides researchers with access to the expertise, technologies and facilities needed to transform discoveries into health innovations that improve lives. As Professor Hooper noted in the NCRIS testimonial video, these national capabilities have been a “game changer” in advancing the project towards the clinic.
